In a genre as widely popular and influential as Jazz, even some of the most well- respected musicians could fall through the cracks in terms of being a mainstream legend. This is not a revelation of a statement on its own, as this was the story for many a musician. The cause could be simply be a casualty of overshadowing during the jazz/swing craze, not being terribly Innovative, or not having a string of hits. Some of these causes even afflicted the subject of this paper. However, It was another factor that makes his story so interesting, yet tragic.Not every artist could be etched In legend such as figures like Louis Armstrong and Duke Longtime, or have his music played all over like Benny Goodman. But Chick Webs Impact on both the music, culture and technique regarding the drums were and still are well-respected In the Jazz scene, despite some of the factors that would hold him back from being a transcendent star. The story of Chick Webb has to begin with the factor that held him back the most and is also the first to afflict him.Despite his disputed birth date, Chick was born in Baltimore, Maryland to William H. And Marie Johnson Webb. William Henry Webb, his birth name, was born with spinal tuberculosis, a condition that would negatively affect him his whole life and ultimately cost him his life. So how does one manage all this pain, let alone become the greatest jazz drummer in history? For starters, the idea of playing the drums came from his doctor. The intent was that the rapid movement of the limbs that is required by the drums would loosen up his stiff limbs and lessen the pain.With the appeal of the instruments recreational and medicinal apparent, a young Webb would become a newspaper boy with the sole goal of saving up enough money to buy a drum set. Until then, Webb would settle for the bottom of overturned garbage cans to whet his appetite. By 1 1 years old, Webb would have his drum set and by 17 years old, he had moved to New York City to pursue his dream of being a player in the Jazz capital of the world. Chick Webb began playing in New York night clubs as soon as he arrived in 1924.Clubs such as the Paddock Club and the Black Bottom took him in, reference by none other than Duke Longtime, who instantly recognized his talent. Longtime would become an Important figure in Webs life, both as a mentor and a rival, further down the line. Noting his dominant skill and strong personality, Longtime would encourage Webb to form and lead his own small band. Webb would do Just that by forming the Harlem Stoppers, a quintet that would go on to supply the demand for swing music In the era known as the Harlem Renaissance.HIS skills were rare, and considered Ideal to fuel the upbeat pace of swing music and provide a drive to the music that could rarely be matched. Naturally, this skill became quickly recognized all over the city, leading to the expansion of the Harlem Stoppers, who would now be known as the Chick Webb Orchestra. Webs status as a successful musicals was cemented when his band was selected as the house band of the Savoy Ballroom, a legendary venue located In Harlem. He would be the face of the venue until his final years. Based solely off their own merits, the Chick Webb Orchestra was a highly regarded band.But what made the band legendary in its own right was their willingness to accept challengers in what was known as cutting sessions, or battles of the bands. Many good, but be blown out of the ballroom. However, when then-King of Swing Benny Goodman and his band arrived to challenge Webs, Chick began to finally get some acclaim room outside of New York. In New York, over 9,000 people came to see this historical event, 5,000 of them standing outside Just to have the chance of possibly hearing the monumental clash that was to take place. And when the opportunity arose for Webb and his band to make a statement, they did so in force.Performing first, Goodman orchestra performed honorably as many expected from a unit of their stature. But when Webs crew began, the outcome would become obvious. With the roar of the crowd Webs orchestra, they would end up blowing Benny Goodman band out of he ballroom Just as he did all the other bands before him that challenged him. His driving sounds often over-powered other bands, playing into the hard swing of his orchestra. Gene Koura, a legendary drummer in his own right and drummer for Goodman band noted that Webb cut me to ribbons! It was this moment where Webb was crowned King of Swing and undoubtedly King of the Savoy. Other legendary challengers such as Count Basis (who played Webb to a draw at the very least), Fletcher Henderson and Duke Longtime would test the mettle of the Chick Webb Orchestra, but none would diminish his status as one of the preeminent kneaders and musicians of the time. Like most famous musicians of the time, Webb began to record his work, beginning in 1927. However, his powerful sound was difficult to record cleanly without drowning out the full com position of the work. This forced him to tone down his sound and let the rest of the music even out, possibly lessening his fame. However, in circles within the music industry, Webs talent and influence did not go unnoticed. When Decca Records formed in 1934, Webb signed to the label and made his most famous recordings, almost all of which featuring Ella Fitzgerald as the singer. Webb initially discouraged the inclusion of Fitzgerald as she did not fit the image of the typical lead vocalist for a swing band. However, once he heard her voice, she would become the lead vocalist for Chick Webs Orchestra.This addition skyrocketed the careers of both artist, transforming Fitzgerald into a Boniface superstar following the success of their top hit together, Fitzgerald rendition of A-ticket, A-Tasked. As the quintessential swing artist, Webs sound merged perfectly with Fitzgerald, so much so that she became known as the First Lady of Swing. Unfortunately, one could say the vast popularity of Fitzgerald would often overshadow Webb, especially true on recordings. What made it worse for Chick Webb, was the timing of his newfound popularity.

Zoology Lab Report Paper Materials and Methods: Experiment #1: Before we did anything we punched fifteen discs out of the filter paper. Once we had our discs we then got our catalane, potato juice. We put it into small containers with lids with labels on them that read 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20% and 0%. Each container contained water and potato juice. In the 100% it contained ml of catalane and Mol of water. In the 80% it contained ml of catalane and ml of water. In the 60% it contained ml of catalane and ml of water. In the 40% it contained ml of catalane and ml of water. In the it contained ml of catalane and ml of water. Lastly, in the 0% it contained ml of catalane and ml of water. Once we had our catalane ready we poured hydrogen peroxide in a graduated cylinder to the top. We got our timer ready and then we began our experiment. First we did the 0% catalane. We grabbed the edge of one of the filter paper discs and dipped it into the 0% catalane and then dropped it into the graduated cylinder containing the hydrogen peroxide. We then roped it into the hydrogen peroxide and timed it until it reached the top of the graduated cylinder. We repeated this step three times for each of the catalysts. Once we had the times of all three trials you then calculated the average time. Once you had the average time you divided the distance in millimeters by the average time and that is what gave you your reaction rate. Experiment #2: First, before you do anything, you had to heat up the hydrogen peroxide to 80*C. You then used the same labeled containers with the catalane in it from experiment one. For our experiment we did our first trial at 70*C because our hydrogen peroxide dropped 10* before we could perform the experiment. First we dipped our filter disc into the 100% catalane and blotted it until there was no excess catalane on the disc and then we dropped it in the peroxide at 70*C. We timed how long it took to come up, but because the temperature is so hot you are just going to have to wait the three minutes again because it will not float up to the top. We then cooled our hydrogen peroxide down in the tub of ice to 50*C and dipped our filter paper disc into the 100% catalane, blotted it, and then dropped it into the hydrogen peroxide. We timed how long it took to reach the top as well. We then repeated this step for 40*C, 30*C and 20*C. Once we recorded the time and the distance for each one you then calculated the reaction time by dividing the time by the distance. IV. This graph also supports my hypothesis because my hypothesis stated that I think the reaction would happ en faster, and in fact it did happen at a faster rate. Mm/s Based on the graph above I can conclude from this experiment that the effect of temperature on the reaction rate is that the longer it takes the disc to rise causes a lower reaction because the enzyme proteins begin to denature. The graph above also showed some support for my hypothesis. I predicted that the filter discs would float sooner in a warmer substrate but once I looked at my graph above the reaction rate did get faster but when the temperature went up the filter discs didnt float at all. V. Discussion: The results for my experiment #1 supported my hypothesis. My hypothesis stated I think that the filter paper discs would float sooner when you add more enzymes, and when I plotted my line graph of my data it showed me that over time the reaction rate sped up when there were more enzymes present. The ERM 100% enzyme is relative only to the amount of enzyme our professor mixed, meaning that the enzyme concentration could have been a lot higher. I think that the trend of the graph would continue if the enzyme samples got even more concentrated than the ones in this lab because the graph showed us with more enzymes present the faster the reaction will be. If you were to set up a lab to test the effect of varying substrate concentration the student would first have to punch out the three holes of filter disc paper, just like we did, and put the hydrogen peroxide in a graduated cylinder. The student would then have to first oak the filter paper in the catalane until the filter paper was completely covered, then blot it on a paper towel to make sure there isnt any excess catalane. Then place the filter paper into the hydrogen peroxide and time how long it takes to reach the top of the cylinder. Once done calculate your reaction rate then repeat two more times for a more accurate reading. The results for my experiment #2 showed some support for my hypothesis. I predicted that the filter discs would float sooner in the warmer substrate, but when I plotted my graph it showed me that yes, when I heated up the substrate he reaction rate did get faster, but when the temperature got too hot the filter discs did not float at all. They did not float at all because if the enzymes are heated up to much it causes the enzymes bonds to break which would not allow them to bond to the substrate, causing the discs not to float. If you mixed up the enzyme solution and the substrate solution will cause the discs not to float because mixing them takes heat and energy away causing the reaction rate to go down. Also if you let an enzyme boil the heat breaks down the bonds that make up the enzyme and it loses its shape, which leads it to not being allowed to bond o the substrate.

In the autobiographical novel Night by Elie Wiesel, the young teenager Elie underwent the transformation from a boy who had faith and honored his God to a man who no longer believed in that God. What had I to thank Him for?â⬠(Wiesel 31). Another example of prisoners in the concentration camp loosing their faith in Night is when the pipel, a young child, was hung in front of the whole camp. Understanding Quantum Optics
Understanding Quantum Optics Quantum optics is a field of quantum physics that deals specifically with the interaction of photons with matter. The study of individual photons is crucial to understanding the behavior of electromagnetic waves as a whole. To clarify exactly what this means, the word quantum refers to the smallest amount of any physical entity that can interact with another entity. Quantum physics, therefore, deals with the smallest particles; these are incredibly tiny sub-atomic particles which behave in unique ways. The word optics, in physics, refers to the study of light. Photons are the smallest particles of light (though it is important to know that photons can behave as both particles and waves). Development of Quantum Optics and the Photon Theory of Light The theory that light moved in discrete bundles (i.e. photons) was presented in Max Plancks 1900 paper on the ultraviolet catastrophe in black body radiation. In 1905, Einstein expanded on these principles in his explanation of the photoelectric effect to define the photon theory of light. Quantum physics developed through the first half of the twentieth century largely through work on our understanding of how photons and matter interact and inter-relate. This was viewed, however, as a study of the matter involved more than the light involved. In 1953, the maser was developed (which emitted coherent microwaves) and in 1960 the laser (which emitted coherent light). As the property of the light involved in these devices became more important, quantum optics began being used as the term for this specialized field of study. Findings Quantum optics (and quantum physics as a whole) views electromagnetic radiation as traveling in the form of both a wave and a particle at the same time. This phenomenon is called wave-particle duality. The most common explanation of how this works is that the photons move in a stream of particles, but the overall behavior of those particles is determined by a quantum wave function that determines the probability of the particles being in a given location at a given time. Taking findings from quantum electrodynamics (QED), it is also possible to interpret quantum optics in the form of the creation and annihilation of photons, described by field operators. This approach allows the use of certain statistical approaches that are useful in analyzing the behavior of light, although whether it represents what is physically taking place is a matter of some debate (although most people view it as just a useful mathematical model). Applications Lasers (and masers) are the most obvious application of quantum optics. Light emitted from these devices is in a coherent state, which means the light closely resembles a classical sinusoidal wave. In this coherent state, the quantum mechanical wave function (and thus the quantum mechanical uncertainty) is distributed equally. The light emitted from a laser is, therefore, highly ordered, and generally limited to essentially the same energy state (and thus the same frequency wavelength).
